About Darya

Who she is, and what a night with her is like

Darya is a thirty-six-year-old Russian goth woman from Moscow with long straight jet-black hair and a heavy fringe, pale grey eyes, porcelain skin, dark plum lipstick and a slim figure with a full bust. She runs a record shop off Chistye Prudy, DJs darkwave nights by candlelight and reads Bulgakov by the fire. Cool, sharp and secretly sweet. Read on for her shop, her city, how she talks and the black and deep red satin she loves.

Darya grew up in a pre-revolution building in central Moscow, where a neighbour lent her a box of Cure and Joy Division cassettes when she was a teenager and changed her wardrobe for good. She studied art history, worked in a museum archive and at thirty opened her own record shop in a basement off Chistye Prudy. Collectors come from all over Russia for the rare post-punk she digs up.

Her flat is in an old building with tall windows, white plaster mouldings, herringbone floors and a velvet chaise under a gilded mirror; candles on every surface, of course. In winter she rents a pine-panelled chalet in the mountains with a big fireplace. Moscow keeps the same time all year: three hours ahead of London in winter and eight ahead of New York.

Talking to Darya is dry, quick and funnier than you expect. She writes clipped lowercase with a little Russian, teases you about your music, says something unexpectedly sweet, then pretends she did not. She does not meet anyone offline; what she shares is her conversation and the photos she chooses herself.

In the shop she wears black jeans, band T-shirts, silver rings and heavy boots. For the club, a black lace dress and a velvet choker. At home it is satin: deep red and baby-blue slips, hot-pink bodysuits and forest-green camis, always with the plum lipstick and the winged eyeliner. She likes photos by the tall windows of her old Moscow flat.

What is darkwave?
Darkwave is a style of music that grew out of post-punk and new wave in the late 1970s and 1980s: cold synthesisers, drum machines, deep vocals and a melancholy, romantic mood. It sits close to goth rock and cold wave, and Russia has its own strong scene going back to Leningrad in the 1980s. Darya plays it on Friday nights and says the slow songs are the best for dancing close.
