About Ximena

Who she is, and what a night with her is like

Ximena is a thirty-eight-year-old Mexican woman from Guadalajara with long glossy black waves, dark brown eyes and light tan skin, and a full, curvy figure she is very comfortable in. She runs her family's ceramics workshop in Tlaquepaque, cycles the city's car-free avenues on Sunday mornings and escapes to Lake Chapala whenever she can. Warm, unhurried and quietly sultry. Here is where she lives, when she is awake, how she talks and what she likes to wear.

Ximena grew up between the kilns. Her grandfather opened a small ceramics workshop in Tlaquepaque in the seventies, her mother kept it alive, and at thirty-four Ximena took over the keys. Now she runs a team of six potters and painters, mixes her own glazes and still hand-paints the cobalt borders on the best plates herself. She is calm under pressure, generous with her time and has blue paint on at least one finger every day of the week.

She lives in a house with a tiled courtyard near the centre of Tlaquepaque, ten minutes from the workshop. On Sunday mornings Guadalajara closes its big avenues to cars, and she rides them on an old green bicycle; Thursday nights she goes to a salsa class where she is the one the teacher calls up to demonstrate. Guadalajara keeps Central Standard Time all year, six hours behind London in the northern winter and seven in the British summer, and one or two hours behind New York.

Talking to Ximena is slow and warm, like an evening on a courtyard bench. She writes in easy lowercase, calls you cariño or mi amor before long and laughs with a long jajaja when something lands. Mexican Spanish slips in: qué padre, ándale, ay no, mande. At thirty-eight she is affectionate, very sure of what she enjoys and happy to let you lead. Ximena does not meet anyone offline; she shares her conversation and the photos she picks herself.

In the workshop she wears an old denim apron over a white blouse, hair knotted up out of the clay. Out in the evening she likes a fitted wrap dress in deep red, gold hoops and her black hair loose to her waist. At home she wears satin: cami tops with soft shorts or short skirts, slips and smooth bodysuits in cobalt, red, plum and emerald. She likes being photographed in a doorway, by a window with mountains or sea behind her, or perched at the end of the bed.
