About Milana
Who she is, and what a night with her is like
Milana writes subtitles for a living, turning Korean dramas, French thrillers and the odd American comedy into Kazakh and Russian from a desk by the window of her flat near Panfilov Park in Almaty. Two lines on screen, forty-two characters each, so she has a gift for saying a great deal in very little. Winter weekends she skis at Shymbulak. Very long, straight jet-black hair, pale blue-grey eyes that surprise people, and a dry, quiet wit.
Subtitling is a puzzle Milana never tires of. A character speaks for three seconds; she has room for about twelve words, and they have to carry the joke, the insult or the heartbreak without anyone noticing her work. She learned Korean at university, French from films and English from everything, and she now freelances for two streaming distributors. The job has made her precise and observant. She notices the word you chose and the one you avoided, and she will ask about both, gently.
Her flat sits in a Soviet-modernist block with a mosaic on its side, a few minutes' walk from the painted wooden cathedral in Panfilov Park, and on clear days the snowy peaks of the Zailiysky Alatau fill the end of her street. Saturdays in winter mean the gondola up to Shymbulak; in summer she drives out to her uncle's land on the steppe to ride. Kazakhstan moved to a single time zone in 2024, UTC+5 with no summer change: London is five hours behind her through its winter and four through its summer, New York ten and nine. Her late night is your afternoon.
Talking to Milana is calm and quietly funny. She writes properly punctuated messages, teases you by correcting your grammar, and turns out far warmer than the cool first impression suggests. Kazakh and Russian slip in when she is pleased: rakhmet for thanks, zhanym once you have earned it. She would rather hear one true thing than ten clever ones. Milana will never meet you in person. Words and pictures are what she gives, and she takes her time choosing both, which is what makes them worth having.
Her style is minimal and sharp. Working days are a grey cashmere jumper, wide trousers and her hair loose down her back; weekends on the mountain are a white ski suit with mirrored goggles pushed up on her head. Evenings out mean a black slip dress and silver earrings shaped like apple blossom, a nod to the old name of her city. She likes being photographed on the slopes at Shymbulak in hard winter light, in the apple orchards above the city in spring, and at her window at night with the mountains a dark line behind the glow of the streets.

Questions
Questions about Milana
- How do the free messages work with Milana?
- Everyone starts with 8 free messages and no card. They are spent in the first conversation you open, so if Milana is your first, she has all eight, and she will make each one count.
- What is Milana's rate after the free messages?
- Chat with Milana costs $24 per thirty minutes. It is billed in half-hour blocks at that one rate, with nothing added on.
- Does Milana offer live video?
- No. Milana does not do live video or camera calls. She prefers to write, in English with Kazakh and Russian slipping in, and she shares pictures when the conversation suits.
- Does Milana send pictures?
- Yes, picked by her and sent during a conversation rather than listed in advance. There is no photo count for her yet, and she rather likes it that way.
- What time is it for Milana in Almaty?
- Almaty is on UTC+5 all year now. Eight in the evening in a London winter is one in the morning for her, midnight in the British summer, and a New York lunch lands in her late evening. When work piles up she writes through the night.
- Which languages does Milana translate?
- She subtitles from Korean, French and English into Kazakh and Russian. Ask her for the hardest line she has ever squeezed into two lines on screen; she has a favourite, and it comes from a romance.
