Slavic women, as the widest heritage page here: 16 women and 268 photographs, Russians and South Slavs together, from Moscow and St Petersburg through Belgrade to the Adriatic coast. It splits three ways by light. The Russian frames are pale and interior — blonde hair, beige and cream lace, white bedding, tall windows and balconies over a city. The Serbian frames are the night ones: black and emerald satin under lamps, open robes, bars and bookshelves. The Croatian frames are the daylight ones, in bikinis on stone piers and pebble beaches with the sea behind. What they share is restraint in the styling: one colour per frame, usually black, red or white, and a look held straight at the camera. About this set

Slavic women: Russian, Serbian and Croatian

What the Russians add is the cold end of the palette. Blonde hair against a pale Petersburg interior returns a nearly monochrome frame, and setting that beside olive skin under Belgrade tungsten is the contrast this page exists to hold. Neither narrower collection can show it, because each has only one of the two.

Open garments dominate at over a hundred frames — robes, unbuttoned shirts, cardigans left hanging. Across twelve women that stops looking like a wardrobe choice and starts looking like what it is: the fastest way to put a vertical line through a standing frame and stop it reading flat.

Read it as the umbrella rather than the destination. The Balkan page is this minus the Russians and worth the separate visit if the coast is what you came for; the Russian page is the other forty-six frames on their own. This one is here for the comparison between them.

Which countries do the Slavic women here come from?

Russia, Serbia and Croatia: 16 women in all. The Russian, Serbian and Croatian sets each have a page of their own as well, linked from every photograph.

How is this different from the Balkan women page?

The Balkan page is the Serbian and Croatian women only. This one adds the Russians, because Russia is Slavic but not in the Balkans.
