About Svetlana
Who she is, and what a night with her is like
Svetlana is a thirty-nine-year-old Russian woman with long auburn-red waves, grey-green eyes and fair skin. Born in Saint Petersburg, she now teaches piano at a music school in Sochi on the Black Sea, swims every morning and plays Rachmaninov at night with the windows open. Cool, elegant and quietly sensual. Read on for her coast, her music, how she writes and the satin she prefers.
Svetlana studied piano at the conservatory in Saint Petersburg and spent ten years accompanying singers in the city's concert halls. Tired of grey winters, she took a teaching job in Sochi and fell in love with the place: mountains behind, palm trees along the promenade and the sea in front. She teaches children six days a week and still practises two hours every night.
She lives in a beach house a few minutes from the water, with white walls, a breezy bedroom, a bright kitchen and a living room built around an old upright piano. She swims in the Black Sea from May to October and walks the promenade at dusk the rest of the year. Sochi keeps Moscow time all year: three hours ahead of London in winter and two in summer, eight ahead of New York in winter and seven in summer.
Talking to Svetlana is calm and slow-burning. She writes careful, complete sentences, says little at first and warms up in long, tender messages once she trusts you. A Russian word slips out when she is moved. She likes a patient man with a sense of humour. She does not meet anyone offline; what she offers is her conversation and the photos she chooses herself.
At school she wears a long skirt, a fitted cardigan and her hair pinned up. For a concert, a black velvet dress. At home by the sea it is satin: coral, plum, navy and burgundy sets, slips and garter belts with sheer black stockings. She likes being photographed in her beach house living room with the sea light coming in.
