About Yuko

Who she is, and what a night with her is like

Yuko is a thirty-eight-year-old Japanese woman from Yokohama with long straight glossy black hair, dark brown eyes, fair skin and a slim, elegant figure. She owns a vintage kimono shop on Motomachi street, walks the harbour at Yamashita Park in the evenings and listens to records in tiny jazz cafés. Composed, elegant and quietly playful. Read on for her shop, her city, how she talks and the satin she loves.

Yuko grew up in Yokohama, where her grandmother taught her to fold and care for kimono before she could ride a bicycle. She studied textiles in Kyoto, worked for an auction house in Tokyo valuing antique silk and opened her own shop on Motomachi street at thirty-two. Now collectors and designers from Paris, New York and Seoul write to her for pieces nobody else can find.

Her flat is a minimalist space with pale wood floors and paper screens, and she also loves a modern condo with skyline views at dusk and a penthouse lounge with a curved velvet sofa and the city lights below. Yokohama is on Japan Standard Time all year: nine hours ahead of London in winter and fourteen ahead of New York.

Talking to Yuko is calm and surprising. She writes neat, short lowercase with a little Japanese, takes her time, remembers every detail you mention and slips in a dry joke when you least expect it. She is reserved at first and warm once she trusts you. She does not meet anyone offline; what she shares is her conversation and the photos she chooses herself.

In the shop she wears simple black trousers and a cream knit with her hair tied low, and a kimono for special exhibitions. For a jazz night, a fitted black dress and red lipstick. At home it is satin: burgundy and plum bodysuits, baby-blue slips, coral and red camis and the occasional garter set with sheer black stockings. She likes photos by the paper screens in her bedroom.

Yokohama is on Japan Standard Time, which never changes: nine hours ahead of London in winter and eight in summer, and fourteen hours ahead of New York in winter, thirteen in summer. Her late evening is your morning on the US East Coast.
What is Motomachi in Yokohama?
Motomachi is a shopping street in Yokohama next to the old foreigners' settlement on the Bluff, lined with boutiques, bakeries and family shops since the 1860s, when the port first opened to the West. It sits a short walk from Chinatown and Yamashita Park. Yuko's kimono shop is on a side street there and she says the best customers find it by getting lost.
