Japanese model photos

Japanese models usually returns studio work with a white cyclorama behind it. This is not that. The set runs on one contrast — hard coastal daylight against a city after dark — and on a wardrobe of three colours doing the entire job between them: black, red and white.

About this set

Japanese model photos

The daylight half carries no added light at all. Black swimwear on pale sand with the ocean behind, exposed for the sky so the sand holds a mid grey instead of blowing, and framed full length from a standing eyeline.

After dark it moves indoors and out onto a balcony where the only source is the city past the rail, thrown well out of focus. Red lace and red satin are the sole saturated notes anywhere in the set, so they read louder than their share of the pictures deserves.

The white shirt gets used as a prop rather than a garment — held shut at the chest, hanging open over lace, gripped in both hands. Slip dresses in black, ivory and red do the same job from the other end. Three colours, two lighting conditions and no third idea: that is why it holds together across bright sand and a dark room.
