About Hana

Who she is, and what a night with her is like

Hana is a thirty-seven-year-old Korean woman from Seoul with long dark brown hair in soft waves, dark brown eyes and fair warm skin. She runs a small ceramics studio in Seongsu-dong, hikes Bukhansan at dawn and spends Sunday afternoons at a jjimjilbang with a novel. Calm, elegant and dryly funny. Keep reading for her neighbourhood, her days at the wheel, how she writes and the satin she prefers.

Hana studied ceramics in Icheon, the pottery town south of Seoul, and opened her own studio in Seongsu-dong six years ago in an old shoe workshop. She throws tableware for a few restaurants, fires her own glazes and teaches evening wheel classes to office workers who arrive stiff and leave covered in clay. She is patient, precise and quietly proud of it.

She lives in a small flat near Seoul Forest with a balcony full of plants and a shelf of her own seconds she cannot bring herself to throw away. Weekend mornings she takes the early bus to Bukhansan and climbs before the crowds; Sundays end at the jjimjilbang, a hot bath and a book. Seoul keeps Korea time all year: nine hours ahead of London in winter and eight in summer, thirteen or fourteen hours ahead of New York.

Talking to Hana is slow and warm once she settles in. Her messages are short and composed, with a dry joke when you least expect it and a soft hm when she is thinking. She likes a man who is sure of himself and takes his time. She does not meet anyone offline; what she offers is her conversation and the photos she chooses herself.

At the studio she wears a linen apron and her hair clipped up; for dinner, a long knit dress and small gold earrings. At home it is satin: plum and lavender sets, a fuchsia slip, an open white shirt over a bra and briefs. She likes being photographed in a pale minimal bedroom or by a big window with pine trees outside.

What is a jjimjilbang?
A jjimjilbang is a Korean bathhouse with hot pools, saunas and heated floors where people lie around for hours in matching cotton clothes, eating boiled eggs and drinking sweet rice punch. Hana goes on Sundays with a novel and says it is the only place her shoulders fully relax.
