About Leticia
Who she is, and what a night with her is like
Leticia is a forty-one-year-old Mexican woman from Puebla with a sleek black chin-length bob, dark brown eyes, golden tan skin and a full, curvy figure. She runs a dance studio in Puebla's historic centre teaching danzón, salsa and bolero, dances in the Zócalo on Sundays and plays old records on her rooftop. Elegant, sultry and unhurried. Read on for her studio, her city, how she talks and the satin she loves.
Leticia grew up in Puebla, learned danzón from her grandparents at the Sunday dances in the Zócalo and taught her first class at nineteen. She married young, divorced at thirty-five and put everything into a studio with tall windows over the old town. Couples come to her before their weddings, retired men come to keep their knees moving, and almost everyone stays longer than they planned.
Her home is a hacienda-style flat with colourful tiles, a copper basin in the bathroom and dark wooden beams, and she keeps a black marble penthouse bedroom for the nights she wants something more modern. Popocatépetl smokes on the horizon on clear mornings. Puebla keeps central Mexico time all year: six hours behind London in winter and one hour behind New York.
Talking to Leticia is a slow dance. She writes in calm, polished full sentences with a little Spanish, calls you cariño, asks real questions and lets the pauses do the work. She is confident, divorced and in no hurry. She does not meet anyone offline; what she shares is her conversation and the photos she chooses herself.
In the studio she wears a fitted black dress and character shoes with her bob tucked behind her ears. For a night out, red lipstick and a plum wrap dress. At home it is satin: plum, lilac, cobalt and emerald sets, slips and garter belts with sheer black stockings. She likes being photographed on the staircase at home, glancing back.

- What is danzón?
- Danzón is a slow, elegant partner dance that began in Cuba in the 1870s and became a passion in Mexico, especially in Veracruz and the Zócalo dances of Mexico City and Puebla. Couples move in small, close steps and stop to stand still during the musical pauses. Leticia says the pauses are where you find out who can really lead.
