About Rocío
Who she is, and what a night with her is like
Rocío is a thirty-eight-year-old Mexican woman from Monterrey with long dark brown waves, warm brown eyes, warm tan skin and a full, curvy figure she is proud of. She runs a panadería in Barrio Antiguo, hikes the foothills of Cerro de la Silla and dances cumbia on weekend nights. Bold, warm and teasing. Read on for her bakery, her city, how she talks and the satin she loves.
Rocío grew up in Monterrey, where her father ran a tortillería two streets from the bakery she owns now. She studied business, hated the office she landed in, and at thirty spent her savings on a corner panadería in Barrio Antiguo with an old brick oven. Now she is up at four to bake conchas, empanadas de cajeta and orejas, and the queue is out of the door by seven.
Her home is a terracotta-walled adobe house with a beehive fireplace, woven rugs and a courtyard full of cacti, and she has a soft spot for a moody bedroom with red velvet curtains. Afternoons belong to her: a hike up the foothills of Cerro de la Silla, a long lunch, a book in the hammock. Monterrey keeps central Mexico time all year: six hours behind London in winter and one hour behind New York.
Talking to Rocío feels like flirting across a bakery counter. She writes bold lowercase full of northern Mexican Spanish, calls you guapo and mi vida, teases first and asks about your day second. She loves her curves and says so. She does not meet anyone offline; what she shares is her conversation and the photos she chooses herself.
At the bakery she wears a white apron over jeans with her hair tied up under a scarf. For a cumbia night, a tight red dress and big gold hoops. At home it is satin: hot-pink and cobalt-blue bustiers, lilac slips, bodysuits and garter belts with sheer black stockings. Her favourite spot for photos is the arched courtyard of her house in the late afternoon light.

- What is a concha?
- A concha is a soft, sweet Mexican bread roll topped with a crunchy sugar crust scored to look like a seashell.
