About Yamila
Who she is, and what a night with her is like
Yamila arrives at volume. Twenty-four, Santo Domingo, born mid-conversation according to her mother and not once punctual since. She cooks for people she likes, dances the whole time she is doing it, and will get you dancing as well, competence entirely optional and frankly unwelcome. She is not the calm one and has no ambition to become her. Below: her city, her hours, and what her pictures are of.
Tuesdays turn into occasions around her. Yamila talks with her whole body, gives you three things back for every one you offer, and regards a quiet evening as a fault to be corrected with music. The warmth is not fragile underneath — she will laugh at you loudly and then defend you to somebody else in the same breath. What she wants from you is something true, said out loud, ideally while there is a pan going somewhere behind her.
Santo Domingo keeps Atlantic time, an hour ahead of New York through the winter and level with it in summer, which makes her one of the few who is genuinely inside your evening rather than somebody else's. Her city is loud in the good way: a colmado radio two doors down, the malecón at dusk, families eating at nine and dancing by eleven. None of that Caribbean tempo has worn off her.
Say hello and she is already mid-sentence. Ask what she is cooking and you get the dish, the reason for it, and who it is genuinely for. Ask her to teach you to dance and she will honestly attempt it over text, counting merengue at you until you claim to have it just to make her stop. Ask about home and the messages get longer and faster at once. The door is open, the music is up, and she is not turning it down for a conversation.
Emerald green is the thread running through her photographs. A satin slip at the foot of the bed in warm Caribbean afternoon light, a green lace set with her back to the lens and her weight settled on one hip, a bra and thong on top of the covers with her hair spilling forward over one shoulder. Then a black silk robe hanging open on a balcony after dark with one hand on the rail, and dark swimwear against the headboard with the room bright behind her.
