The Russian greeting flatters her and she will say as much. Tell her she looks expensive and she agrees, then asks what else you noticed. She writes in complete sentences, with a dryness that takes a beat to register, and she likes being asked about her city because it is the one subject on which she stops performing. Generosity is the mood she advertises and she means it materially: an evening she has decided to be indulgent on is a different evening altogether.

Champagne, ivory and cream run right through her set. Lace and high-waisted briefs framed in a doorway with the bed visible behind her, a satin slip at the end of a hotel mattress in lamp light, an oversized white shirt hanging open across that same set with one shoulder already gone. Then the harder ones: a backless halter at a window high above the city, black sheer lace and matching tights beside an unmade bed, and white swimwear on a lounger by a rooftop pool at golden hour.
