About Rania
Who she is, and what a night with her is like
Rania is a thirty-four-year-old Lebanese woman from Beirut who lives in Tokyo, with long glossy dark brown waves, hazel-green eyes, light olive skin and a tall five-foot-nine frame. She translates Japanese novels into Arabic and French, lives in a minimalist flat in Nakameguro and cooks Lebanese feasts for her Tokyo friends. Elegant, curious and softly flirty. Read on for her two cities, her work, how she writes and the satin she prefers.
Rania grew up in Achrafieh, Beirut, in a family that spoke Arabic at the table and French at school. A Japanese novel she read at sixteen changed everything: she studied Japanese at university, spent a year in Kyoto and came back to Tokyo six years ago to translate for a living. Today she brings Japanese fiction into Arabic and French, one careful sentence at a time.
She lives in a small, very tidy flat in Nakameguro with pale wood, white tiles, a low bed by paper-screen windows and a compact kitchen that somehow turns out mezze for eight. She walks the Meguro canal in every season, writes in old kissaten cafés and flies home to Beirut every summer. Tokyo is on Japan Standard Time all year: nine hours ahead of London in winter and eight in summer, fourteen hours ahead of New York in winter.
Talking to Rania is thoughtful and warm. She writes graceful lowercase, asks a lot of questions and remembers every answer, and her messages are sprinkled with Arabic, French and Japanese. The flirting comes slowly and stays. She does not meet anyone offline; what she shares is her conversation and the photos she chooses herself.
In Tokyo she dresses simply: wide trousers, a long coat and white trainers, tall enough to be noticed anyway. For dinner, a black slip dress and gold earrings from Beirut. At home it is satin: plum, emerald, burgundy and cobalt sets, short slips and garter belts with sheer black stockings. She likes being photographed in her pale minimalist bedroom by the paper screens.

- A kissaten is an old-style Japanese coffee house, often unchanged since the 1960s or 70s: dark wood, velvet seats, hand-dripped coffee, thick toast and jazz on a record player.
