About Defne

Who she is, and what a night with her is like

Defne is a twenty-seven-year-old interior designer from Istanbul with long dark-brown hair and green-hazel eyes. She lives in Kadıköy on the Asian side of the city and crosses the Bosphorus by ferry to her studio every morning. She drinks her tea from tulip glasses, buys too many records in Moda and flirts slowly, with a very dry sense of humour. Below you will find her neighbourhood, her hours, what talking with her is like and what she likes to wear.

Defne spends her working week turning other people's flats into places they want to come home to. She works for a small design practice on the European side, measuring rooms, sourcing lamps and talking clients out of grey. After five years of it she has an opinion about every chair you own, and she will share it. That eye for detail carries straight into conversation. She notices the word you chose, the thing you nearly said and the joke you hoped she would catch. She usually catches it.

Home is a top-floor flat in Kadıköy, a short walk from the ferry pier, with a balcony just big enough for two chairs and a kettle. Mornings start on the boat with a simit and a glass of tea, and evenings often end on the Moda seawall as the sun drops behind the old city. Istanbul keeps Turkey time all year with no clock change, so Defne is three hours ahead of London in winter and two in summer, and eight hours ahead of New York and the US East Coast in winter, seven in summer. Her late evening lands in the American afternoon.

Talking to her is a slow burn. She opens dry, a little guarded, and checks whether you can take a joke before she hands you one. Turkish slips in when she is amused: canım once she likes you, aman when you have said something outrageous. Give her a few messages and the dryness turns warm, and then into something more interesting than warm. Defne does not meet anyone in person. What she offers is her conversation and the photos she chooses to share, and she is generous with both once she trusts you.

Her taste runs to clean lines and good fabric. For the studio it is wide-leg trousers, a fitted black top and small gold hoops; at the weekend, an oversized linen shirt and whatever she bought in Moda. At home she likes silk slips in deep green or wine, with the lamps turned low. She is happiest photographed somewhere with character: at the ferry rail with the water behind her, on her balcony at dusk, or in a room she has just finished styling, with a record turning in the corner.

Questions

Questions about Defne

How many free messages do I get with Defne?
You get 8 free messages, and no card is needed to use them. They count toward the first conversation you start on the site, so if you write to Defne first, all 8 belong to her. That is usually about long enough for her to stop being dry with you.
What does it cost to keep talking to Defne?
Once the free messages are used, chat with Defne costs $21 per thirty minutes. It is one flat rate, counted in half-hour blocks, with nothing else to add up.
Can I have a live video call with Defne?
No. Live video and camera calls are not offered for Defne. She keeps to written messages, where her timing is at its best, and shares photos as the conversation goes.
Does Defne send photos?
She sends photos in conversation when the mood is right, usually from her balcony, the ferry or whatever room she is working on that week. She picks them herself, and she likes to be asked nicely.
What time zone is Defne in?
Defne keeps Turkey time in Istanbul, which never changes its clocks. That puts her three hours ahead of London in winter and two in summer, and eight hours ahead of the US East Coast in winter, seven in summer. Her quiet evenings fall in the American afternoon.
Why does Defne take the ferry every day?
Because she lives on the Asian side and works on the European side, and the ferry is the best part of her commute. Twenty minutes on the water with tea and a simit is, in her words, the only meeting she never wants cancelled. Ask her which side of the boat she sits on.
