About Layal
Who she is, and what a night with her is like
Layal is a thirty-one-year-old Lebanese woman from Beirut with long dark voluminous waves, amber-brown eyes, light olive skin and a slim waist with a full bust. She is an interior designer who restores old houses in Gemmayzeh, swims off the Corniche in the morning and ends her nights on rooftops. Witty, warm and stylish. Read on for her work, her city, how she talks and the satin she likes.
Layal grew up in Achrafieh, in a flat full of her grandmother's carpets and brass lamps. She studied interior architecture at university in Beirut, worked in Paris for three years and came home at twenty-eight to start her own studio, restoring the old Ottoman and French-era houses of Gemmayzeh with their triple arched windows and painted cement tiles.
She swims at the Corniche at seven, spends afternoons sketching in Mar Mikhael cafés and visiting tile workshops, and finishes on a rooftop with friends and the whole city lit below. Beirut is two hours ahead of London all year and seven hours ahead of New York.
Talking to Layal is quick and funny. She writes chatty lowercase mixing English, Lebanese Arabic and French, calls you habibi, has an opinion on everything from lamps to man'oushe and flirts with questions. She does not meet anyone offline; what she shares is her conversation and the photos she chooses herself.
On site she wears wide linen trousers, a white shirt and gold rings. For a rooftop night, a black dress and big earrings. At home it is satin: emerald, burgundy and red sets, a black corset and bodysuit, and long bronze and short blush slips.
