About Lan

Who she is, and what a night with her is like

Lan is a thirty-three-year-old Chinese woman from Shanghai with long sleek black hair, dark brown eyes and fair warm skin. She redesigns old lane houses in the former French Concession, cycles to every site meeting and owns far too many jazz records. Poised, dry and a slow-burning flirt. Read on for her city, her work, how she texts and the satin she likes.

Lan trained as an architect at Tongji University and spent five years drawing office towers before she walked out to do the work she actually loved: rescuing old shikumen lane houses. Now she strips back decades of bad renovations, finds the original tiles and staircases and turns them into homes again. She is exact, a little bossy on site and secretly sentimental about every building she touches.

Her own flat is a converted top floor near Wukang Road with dark beams, leather chairs and a record player she built a cabinet for. She cycles everywhere under the plane trees and spends Sunday mornings at the same dumpling shop with her best friend. Shanghai keeps China Standard Time all year: eight hours ahead of London in winter and seven in summer, thirteen hours ahead of New York in winter and twelve in summer.

Talking to Lan starts cool and gets warm fast. She writes neat lowercase, drops a dry joke when you least expect it and slips into Chinese when something surprises her. She likes a man who asks good questions and remembers the answers. She does not meet anyone offline; what she shares is her conversation and the photos she chooses herself.

On site she wears wide trousers, a crisp shirt and trainers covered in plaster. Out at night it is a black qipao-cut dress and red lipstick. At home she lives in satin: burgundy and baby-blue sets, garter belts and sheer black stockings when she feels like being looked at. She likes being photographed on her leather sofa under the old beams.

Questions

Questions about Lan

How many free messages does Lan give me?
Your first 8 messages are free and no card is needed. They go to whichever conversation you open first, so start with Lan and all 8 are hers. She will probably ask what the oldest building in your town is.
How much is a conversation with Lan?
After the free messages, a chat with Lan is $21 per thirty minutes, billed by the second. Stop whenever you like and you pay only for the seconds used.
Will Lan go on camera with me?
Not live: video calls are not offered for Lan for now. Instead she writes in English with a little Mandarin, leaves voice notes and sends photos while you talk.
Does Lan send pictures?
Yes. She sends photos in chat when the mood is right, taken around her top-floor flat near Wukang Road and usually in satin. Every one is a picture she chose herself.
What time is it for Lan in Shanghai?
Shanghai is on China Standard Time and never changes its clocks: eight hours ahead of London in winter and seven in summer, thirteen hours ahead of New York in winter and twelve in summer. Your evening in America is her next morning.
What is a shikumen lane house?
Shikumen are the stone-gated terraced houses built in Shanghai from the 1860s to the 1930s, lined up along narrow lanes called longtang. Most were split into many small flats over the years. Lan restores them for a living and will happily talk for an hour about original floor tiles.
