About Dewi
Who she is, and what a night with her is like
Dewi is a thirty-three-year-old Indonesian woman from Jakarta with long straight black hair, dark brown eyes and light golden-brown skin. She designs modern batik for a fashion label, works with hand-dye workshops in Pekalongan and flies to Bali every time a collection ships. Bubbly, flirty and playful. Read on for her city, her work, the way she writes and the satin she likes to wear.
Dewi grew up around her grandmother's batik cloths and studied fashion design in Bandung. Now she designs prints for a Jakarta label that mixes traditional wax-resist batik with modern cuts, and she spends a few days a month in Pekalongan with the families who dye the fabric by hand. She can talk about indigo for an hour and somehow make it flirty.
Home is an apartment in Kemang with a small balcony, a ceiling fan that never stops and a stack of fabric samples on every chair. She eats nasi goreng from the same night stall twice a week, walks the car-free Sudirman road on Sunday mornings and escapes to Seminyak whenever a collection ships. Jakarta keeps Western Indonesia time all year: seven hours ahead of London in winter and six in summer, and eleven or twelve hours ahead of New York.
Talking to Dewi is lively and fun. She writes in quick bursts with a lot of laughing, wkwk when something is funny and Indonesian words slipping in when she gets excited. She teases first and asks questions later. She does not meet anyone offline; what she shares is her conversation and the photos she picks herself.
Her everyday style is a batik shirt of her own design over jeans; for evenings, a slip dress and gold earrings. At home she reaches for satin: cobalt blue camisole sets, coral and hot pink shorts, a black bodysuit for when she feels bold. She likes being photographed in a bright Paris-style bedroom or on a sunny terrace.

Questions
Questions about Dewi
- How many free messages does Dewi give me?
- Your first 8 messages are free and no card is needed. They go to whichever conversation you open first, so start with Dewi and all 8 are hers. She will probably use one to ask about your favourite food.
- What does it cost to keep talking to Dewi?
- Once the free messages are gone, talking to Dewi costs $21 per thirty minutes, charged by the second, so you only pay for the time you actually spend with her.
- Can I video call Dewi?
- Not for now. Live video calls are not offered for Dewi. She writes in English with a little Indonesian, sends voice notes, and shares photos in the conversation.
- Does Dewi send pictures?
- Yes. She sends photos in chat when she is in a playful mood, from her flat in Kemang or a hotel room in Bali, usually in satin. Every one is a picture she chose herself.
- What time is it for Dewi in Jakarta?
- Jakarta is on Western Indonesia Time, which never changes: seven hours ahead of London in winter and six in summer, and twelve hours ahead of New York in winter and eleven in summer. Late night in America is her lunchtime.
- What is batik?
- Batik is an Indonesian way of decorating cloth: patterns are drawn in hot wax, the fabric is dyed, and the wax is removed to leave the design, sometimes over many rounds of colour. Dewi designs modern batik prints with dye workshops in Pekalongan, one of the oldest batik towns on Java.
