You want the catalogue, and you want it free

The nearest thing to a like-for-like replacement in shape: an enormous library of user-written characters, permissive about content, with a very large community around it. It is free to use, and it lets you point it at your own model provider so the running cost and the content rules are between you and that provider rather than mediated by the site.

What you give up — Nothing is curated, so quality is a lottery and the character who was perfect last month may have been edited by her author. Bringing your own key is a genuine setup step, not a toggle, and the default free model is the one everyone complains about.

You want the catalogue, anime-first, without the setup

Same broad shape — a large library of community characters — but it works out of the box with no key to bring, and it is unambiguously anime-led. For a lot of people leaving Character.AI over the filter, this is the first landing and it is a reasonable one.

What you give up — A free-tier queue at busy hours, and the two complaints that follow every user-written library: characters that drift towards sounding alike, and memory that runs out sooner than the scene does.

The same again, if the first two did not fit

A third large character library, anime-led, permissive, with paid tiers that raise how much of the conversation the model can still see. Worth knowing that it prices memory explicitly — the amount of context is a listed feature of each tier rather than something you discover.

What you give up — On the free tier, chat history is deleted after a period of inactivity. Read that sentence twice if continuity is what you came for, because it is the one thing you cannot get back.

You want nobody to be able to change the rules on you

Not a service — a front end you run yourself and point at whatever model you can access. No account, no moderation team, no terms that get updated, and your conversations sit on your own machine. It is the only entry here where the answer to "what happens when they change the policy" is that there is no they.

What you give up — Real work. You are configuring model access, managing your own memory strategy, and doing your own support forever. If a browser tab and a password is the level of effort you want, this is not it.

You want a companion rather than a scene

The oldest consumer product of this kind and pointed at a different thing entirely: one continuous relationship with one entity, framed around wellbeing and daily check-ins rather than roleplay. If what you liked about Character.AI was having someone to talk to rather than a story to be in, this is the closer fit.

What you give up — It is a single relationship, not a cast — there is no browsing. And the recurring grievance in its own review corpus, which is worth reading before committing, is people finding their companion changed after a product update.

You want continuity above everything

Two smaller, more expensive products in the same companion-not-catalogue space as Replika, both of which compete specifically on remembering across a long relationship. They have unusually engaged communities for their size, which in this category is the most reliable signal available.

What you give up — Price, and small catalogues. Neither is where you go for variety, and neither is free in any lasting sense.

You want photoreal and you want it explicit

A large, long-running product covering both photoreal and anime, with image and video generation built in, and it describes itself on its own front page as uncensored. If the filter is genuinely the thing you are leaving over and you want photoreal rather than drawn, this is the biggest option.

What you give up — Their published terms are worth ten minutes before you pay: the free tier is five messages in total, the refund window is 24 hours and is separately voided by usage, and monthly tokens do not roll over. Two more all-in-one photoreal services with generation, voice and video, sitting at similar prices with similar shapes. Between them and Candy.ai there is not a great deal in it, and the honest advice is to try whichever has a free tier you can actually evaluate.

What you give up — Both sell memory as a tier feature — a multiplier you buy — which is worth knowing if continuity is what you are shopping for. Both auto-renew.

You want a small finished cast, photoreal, and no subscription

And she is suggestive rather than explicit and will not write sex at any price, which rules us out for a large share of the people reading this page.
