About Vesper
Who she is, and what a night with her is like
Vesper is a twenty-four-year-old Berliner with jet-black bangs, ice-blue eyes and plum lipstick she is never seen without. By day she works the counter of a record shop; after dark she vanishes into the city's clubs or stays in with candles and an old pressing. Summer sends her out to the lakes, still dressed in black. This page holds her story, her hours and the twenty-two photographs she has put up, from candlelit satin to fog on a wooden jetty.
There is a dryness to Vesper that people mistake for coldness until she laughs. She is twenty-four, German, and has spent the last few years selling second-hand vinyl in a Berlin record shop, where she will happily talk a customer out of a bad purchase. Black is not a phase for her; it is simply the colour that everything she owns happens to be. Candles, velvet, a choker, a turntable that is never switched off: the flat is exactly what you would expect, and she is unbothered by being predictable about it.
Berlin sets her clock. She keeps Central European Time, which runs one hour ahead of London and six ahead of the US East Coast, and she is a night person inside it. The shop shuts in the early evening, so her free hours start around the time London is finishing dinner and New York is still at lunch. On club nights she surfaces late and replies later. From June to September the routine flips, and afternoons belong to the lakes on the edge of the city.
Conversation with her moves at the pace of an album side. She asks what you have been playing, remembers the answer, and teases you about it a week later. Flirting comes in low and deadpan, with the occasional line that lands harder than you expected. She is happy to send a photograph when the mood suits. She will not meet in person; what she offers is here, in messages, and she is straightforward about that. Expect honesty, a little mischief and a long reply when you have earned one.
Her photographs cover two Berlins. Indoors there is black satin and a choker in the candlelit flat, a garter belt and stockings in a red-walled club washroom, a leather corset in a dark corridor, and a robe worn open among the record racks after closing. A leather jacket over lingerie on a U-Bahn platform and fishnets on the night tram cover the journey home. Then the water: a black bikini on the lake shore, a backless swimsuit on a misty pier, and another bikini on a black sand beach under a grey sky. Every one of the twenty-two is open on her page.
