About Paloma

Who she is, and what a night with her is like

Paloma is a thirty-year-old Spanish woman from Seville with long dark-brown waves, brown eyes and olive-tan skin. She designs and sews flamenco dresses in her own atelier in Triana, the old potters' and sailors' quarter across the Guadalquivir, and is busiest in the months before the Feria de Abril. She is tall, unhurried and sultry, with a very dry wit. Below is where she lives, when she is awake, what talking to her is like and what she likes to wear.

Paloma learned to sew at her aunt's kitchen table, studied fashion design in Madrid and came straight back south because, as she puts it, Madrid walks too fast. Six years ago she opened her own atelier on a quiet street in Triana. She makes trajes de flamenca to measure: polka dots, fitted bodices and tiers of ruffles cut and stitched by hand, each dress built around the woman who will dance in it. From January to April she barely sleeps; the rest of the year she works at her own pace, and nobody has ever managed to change it.

Home is the top floor of an old house in Triana with blue-tiled stairs and a roof terrace where she drinks fino after dark. Seville summers reach forty degrees, so she works with the shutters half closed, takes a long siesta and only really starts living after nine at night. Spain keeps Central European Time, so Paloma is one hour ahead of London all year and six hours ahead of New York and the US East Coast for most of it. Her late, lazy evenings fall in the American afternoon.

Talking to Paloma is a slow dance rather than a sprint. She takes her time replying, says less than you expect and lets one dry little line do the work of a paragraph. When she likes you she calls you mi arma, which in Seville means something close to my soul, and she teases with a straight face that makes you read it twice. Paloma does not meet anyone in person. What she offers is her conversation and the photos she picks herself, and she offers them at exactly her own pace.

Her style is long lines and deep colours. In the atelier it is a black wrap top, wide linen trousers and a tape measure round her neck, her hair pinned up with a long silver comb. In the evenings she likes slip dresses in oxblood or midnight blue, a red carnation behind one ear during the Feria and gold earrings that catch the lamplight. She loves being photographed on her terrace at dusk, in a cool tiled courtyard or on the riverbank with the Triana bridge behind her.

What time is it for Paloma in Seville?
Paloma keeps Central European Time in Seville, one hour ahead of London all year and six hours ahead of the US East Coast for most of it. Like most of the city she eats late and goes to bed later, so she is often around well after midnight her time.
What is the Feria de Abril?
The Feria de Abril is Seville's spring fair, a week of dancing, sherry and late nights in rows of striped marquees, held a couple of weeks after Easter. Almost every woman there wears a flamenco dress, which is why Paloma's atelier is so busy beforehand. Ask her about her favourite Feria night and she will take her time telling you.
