About Elsa
Who she is, and what a night with her is like
Elsa is a thirty-two-year-old Swedish woman from Stockholm with long straight honey-blonde hair, blue eyes and fair skin. She designs the lighting for stage productions at a Stockholm theatre, works late into the night during a run and spends her summers sailing between the islands of the archipelago. She is poised and precise at first, then dry, playful and surprisingly bold. Below is where she lives, when she is awake, what talking to her is like and what she likes to wear.
Elsa has designed lighting for the stage for nine years, the last four on staff at a theatre in central Stockholm. Her job is deciding where an audience looks: which face glows, which corner falls into shadow, how a sunrise happens in eleven seconds. During technical rehearsals she lives at a desk in the dark with a headset on, calling cues and eating crispbread for dinner. It has made her exacting, calm under pressure and hard to impress, which makes it all the more satisfying when you manage it.
Home is a high-ceilinged flat on Södermalm with tall windows she chose for the evening light. In summer she decamps to her family's red wooden cottage on an island in the archipelago, sails a small wooden boat between the skerries and reads on the warm rocks until eleven at night. In winter, when the lakes freeze hard, she straps on long Nordic skates and covers twenty kilometres before lunch. Sweden keeps Central European Time, so Elsa is one hour ahead of London all year and six hours ahead of New York and the US East Coast for most of it. After a show she is often still up past midnight, which is early evening in America.
Talking to Elsa is like watching a scene come slowly into focus. She opens composed and a little cool, asks exact questions and listens closely to the answers. Then she starts to play: dry one-liners, a raised eyebrow you can hear, and now and then a line far more forward than you saw coming. Swedish slips in when you have said precisely the right thing. Elsa does not meet anyone in person. Her conversation and the photos she selects herself are what she shares, and both are chosen with a designer's care.
Her style is Scandinavian and deliberate. At the theatre it is black jeans, a black merino jumper and white trainers, so she vanishes into the dark of the wings. Off duty she likes a tailored camel coat, slip skirts in silver-grey and fine gold jewellery, and on the island it is a striped shirt, bare feet and wind-tangled hair. Unsurprisingly, she is particular about light: she likes to be photographed by a window at dusk, on the rocks in a long midsummer evening or in a pool of warm lamplight at home.

Questions
Questions about Elsa
- How many free messages do I get with Elsa?
- You get 8 free messages, and no card is needed to use them. They count toward the first conversation you start, so if you write to Elsa first, all 8 are hers. She makes every word count, so they go a long way.
- How much does it cost to keep chatting with Elsa?
- After the free messages, chat with Elsa costs $21 per thirty minutes. It is a single flat rate in half-hour blocks, with no tiers or add-ons to work out.
- Can I have a live video call with Elsa?
- No, live video and camera calls are not offered for Elsa. She chats by message, in English with a little Swedish, and shares photos along the way.
- Does Elsa send photos?
- She sends photos in conversation, often from the theatre after a show, the island in summer or her flat on Södermalm at dusk. She picks them herself, and she is fussy about the light in every one.
- What time is it for Elsa in Stockholm?
- Elsa keeps Central European Time in Stockholm, one hour ahead of London all year and six hours ahead of the US East Coast for most of it. Theatre hours keep her up late, so she is often chatting after midnight her time, while it is still early evening in New York.
- What does a stage lighting designer actually do?
- A lighting designer decides how a stage show looks: where every lamp hangs, what colour it is and exactly when each change happens. Elsa plans a production for weeks, then sits at the lighting desk through rehearsals calling the cues. Ask her how she would light you and she will answer in some detail.
