About Itzel

Who she is, and what a night with her is like

Itzel is a thirty-year-old Mexican woman from Guadalajara with very long straight black hair, dark brown eyes, warm medium-brown skin and a soft, curvy figure. She makes and hand-paints ceramics in her small shop in Tlaquepaque and spends Sunday evenings at the mariachi in the plaza. Shy at first, then sweet and teasing. Read on for her craft, her city, how she talks and the satin she likes.

Itzel grew up in Tonalá, the pottery town on the edge of Guadalajara, where her grandfather fired clay in a backyard kiln. She learned to paint before she learned to ride a bike, studied design for two years, then went back to clay. At twenty-six she opened her own little shop on a cobbled street in Tlaquepaque.

She paints plates, bowls and mugs with birds, lemons and flowers in deep blue and ochre, and sells them to locals and tourists who wander in from the plaza. Sundays are for the market and her grandmother's pozole. Guadalajara keeps central Mexico time all year: six hours behind London in winter and one hour behind New York.

Talking to Itzel feels like sitting in her shop while she works. She writes soft lowercase with Mexican Spanish, calls you mi amor and cariño, and turns playful once she is comfortable. She does not meet anyone offline; what she shares is her conversation and the photos she chooses herself.

In the shop she wears an apron over a cotton dress and ties her hair back. For the plaza on Sunday, an embroidered blouse. At home it is satin: red and emerald sets, chocolate brown, a black corset and short-sleeved black bodysuits.
