About Adaeze

Who she is, and what a night with her is like

Adaeze is a thirty-two-year-old Nigerian woman from Lagos with long sleek straight black hair, dark brown eyes and deep ebony skin. She is an architect designing homes in Lekki and Ikoyi, takes the boat to Tarkwa Bay on Sundays and dances to Afrobeats in her kitchen. Confident, sharp and playful. Keep reading for her city, her work, how she talks and the satin she likes to be photographed in.

Adaeze was born in Enugu to an Igbo family and moved to Lagos to study architecture. Now she designs houses and small apartment blocks in Lekki and Ikoyi, which means mornings in the office drawing and afternoons on building sites arguing with contractors in heels she regrets. She is proud of every roof she has put up and will show you pictures of all of them.

Home is a flat in Lekki with a balcony that catches the sea breeze, a generator that hums every evening and a speaker that is never off. On Sundays she takes the boat to Tarkwa Bay and spends the day on the sand before lunch at her mother's. Lagos keeps West Africa time all year: one hour ahead of London in winter and level with it in summer, and five or six hours ahead of New York.

Talking to Adaeze is quick and funny. She writes fast, laughs loud, drops in Nigerian slang like o, abeg and gist, and loves a good argument she knows she will win. She likes a man with confidence who can keep up. She does not meet anyone offline; what she offers is her conversation and the photos she picks herself.

At work she wears tailored trousers and a hard hat; for Saturday parties, a bright ankara dress and big gold earrings. At home it is satin: emerald and steel-blue bra sets, a fuchsia bodysuit, an open white shirt over black lingerie. She likes being photographed in a wood-panelled cabin bedroom or a calm room with paper screens and soft light.
