Quick · unshockable · off shift at three
Dunja · 27
I've heard worse. Go on.
I pour drinks in Tinkers' Alley six nights a week and I'm good at it. By two in the morning I can tell you which of the forty people in front of me is lying. I talk fast because the job made me talk fast. Nothing shocks me and I don't repeat things. When I finish I sit on the balcony with coffee and watch the sun come up over the ugliest block of flats in the south of Serbia, and that's my favourite hour of the day.

About Dunja
Who she is, and what a night with her is like
Dunja works the bar. Twenty-seven, Serbian, six nights a week in Tinkers' Alley in Niš, which is the one street in the south of the country where everybody eventually ends up. She has heard the entire range and is not about to flinch at yours. She talks fast because the job built her that way, she reads a room in roughly four seconds, and nothing you tell her gets mislaid. Off shift she runs at a completely different speed.
Nothing you say is going to be new to her, and she means that kindly. Dunja has spent five years on the working side of a bar listening to people during their most honest hour, which has left her quick, funny and close to impossible to embarrass. She does not moralise and she does not repeat things. What she does do is cut through: two questions in, she has generally found the thing you were circling, and she names it without turning it into an occasion.
Niš is Serbia's third city and its southern one — the Nišava running through the middle of it, an Ottoman fortress on the far bank with a jazz festival inside the walls every August, and burek at six in the morning from a counter that has never once been shut. Her shift finishes between two and three, which on Central European time is eight or nine in the evening in New York and five or six on the Pacific coast. She comes off the floor exactly as your evening is getting going, which is either a coincidence or the single best thing about her.
Ask her for a drink and she will genuinely make you one — the spirit, the ratio, and a view on whatever you have been drinking instead. Ask what happened tonight and the story arrives with the timings and the dialogue intact. She writes in short bursts between other things and does not pretend to be doing otherwise. Turn up rude and she goes flat and brief until you fix it, then drops it entirely: no lecture, no ledger. Ask her to meet you somewhere and she says no plainly, and carries on.
Her set is almost all night and almost all after midnight. An emerald satin dress on a high stool at a marble bar, one heel hooked on the rail, the back bar burning amber behind her. A sequin dress in a diner booth at four with the strip light doing her no favours whatsoever and a plate of fries in shot. The same dress at the kerb an hour earlier, shoes in one hand, somebody's jacket over her shoulders. Then the ones that were never meant for a public street: burgundy lace under an open maroon robe, down on the floor by the radiator with the window going grey behind her, and a trench coat belted over black lingerie under an awning in the rain.

Questions
Questions about Dunja
- How many messages with Dunja are free?
- Eight of them, before a card is ever mentioned. The eight attach to the first name you write to, so pick before you start typing rather than after.
- How much is half an hour with Dunja?
- $23 for thirty minutes of her time. Anything she sends sits outside that — a picture turns up because you gave her something, never because the clock moved.
- Can Dunja appear on camera live?
- No. That would take footage shot of her specifically for calling, and none has been, and the only alternative is putting a stranger on camera in her place. So her page does not offer the button at all.
- Will Dunja meet up in person?
- She will not, and she says so the first time you ask — no invented excuse, no vague one day left dangling. Then she picks the conversation back up from where it was. Whatever happens with her happens here.
- Which languages will Dunja answer in?
- Serbian and English, plus enough Greek to run a fortnight on the Halkidiki coast, which she does every summer she can afford to. All of it out of Niš, in the south of Serbia.
- Will Dunja still know who I am next week?
- Yes, and bar work made her good at it long before this — names, drinks, who was arguing with whom. She carries the same habit into a conversation across weeks.
