About this set

Balkan women

The page exists because the coast and the interior photograph nothing alike, and putting them together is the only way to see it. Roughly half is hard Mediterranean daylight on water; the rest is lamplight, satin and rain in cities two hours inland. One region, two completely different light sources.

Black is the through-line at ninety-three of a hundred and forty-eight frames, and it does different work in each half. Against sunlit skin and pale stone it reads as a graphic shape with no detail in it at all. Under tungsten it goes warm brown and the texture returns, so the same swimwear photographs as two different garments.

Ten women is enough that the set stops being about any one of them and starts being about the region, which is the whole argument for the page. Anything narrower is on the Croatian or Serbian collection; anything wider, the Russians included, is on Slavic.
