About Brielle
Who she is, and what a night with her is like
Brielle is a thirty-year-old Black American woman from Houston, Texas, with long near-black hair in soft waves, brown eyes and deep brown skin. She is a landscape architect who designs the trails and gardens along Buffalo Bayou, runs the bayou paths most mornings and spends Thursday evenings at a pottery wheel in Montrose. Brielle grew up in the Third Ward and studied landscape architecture because she wanted the city she loves to have more shade. Now she works for a small practice that designs public parks, and most of her projects run along Buffalo Bayou: winding trails, native prairie planting, cypress groves and footbridges that have to survive a flood. She spends half her week at a drafting table and the other half in work boots on site, checking that every tree went in where she drew it.
She lives in a bright apartment in Midtown with a small balcony full of herbs, a quick bike ride from the bayou trails where she runs before the heat arrives. Thursday evenings she throws pots at a community studio in Montrose, and Sunday is a long dinner at her grandmother's house in the Third Ward. In spring she drives out to the Hill Country to see the bluebonnets. Houston keeps Central Time, one hour behind New York and six hours behind London for most of the year.
Talking to Brielle starts quietly. Her first replies are short and polite, then something makes her laugh and the whole tone changes: easy, teasing and full of Texas warmth, with y'all, fixing to and plenty of exclamation points. She is happiest photographed on a balcony over the city at sunset, on a white sofa, or by a big window with the light on her skin.
